EMRC's Battery Collection Program (for schools)

EMRC has developed a Battery Collection Program for schools to capture batteries from the household waste stream, ensuring disposal does not damage our sensitive environment.

Over 100 schools in Perth's Eastern Region belong to EMRC's Battery Collection Program. Students bring in old household batteries, and EMRC coordinates the collection of the batteries so that they can be sent interstate and recycled.

The program is offered free of charge to schools located within EMRC's member Council regions of Bassendean, Bayswater, Kalamunda, Mundaring and Swan.

How does the Battery Collection Program work?

Schools register to be a part of the program and receive a  collection bin for a central area and small containers for the classrooms. Students bring in old batteries from home and EMRC then collects, weighs and transports the batteries to the recycling centre.

The program involves a competition between the 109 participating schools in the region which has proven to be a strong motivator in encouraging school battery collection.

Schools run the program internally in a number of different ways with the most common being through a class verse class competition.

Each school will have their batteries collected at least once a semester determined by the roster sent out annually. If the battery bin requires collection before the assigned date, contact EMRC's Waste Education Officer.

How can my school register?

If you are a school in Perth's Eastern Region and are interested in this program, please contact Waste Education on (08) 9424 2222 or email Waste Education.

Once the Battery Collection Program registration form has been received, the Waste Education Officer will contact you to arrange the drop off of your start up kit which includes the collection bin, small containers and information about collection and recycling of batteries.

For schools which do not fall in Perth's Eastern Region please call your local Council or Regional Council to see if a similar program is running.

Let's talk about batteries!

New and existing schools have the opportunity to have an EMRC waste education officer give a brief talk to your school about the battery collection program and its benefits to the environment. Students and teachers will learn more about what happens to their recycled batteries.

Call EMRC's Waste Education Officer on (08) 9424 2222.

Helpful hints and tips on battery safety

Place your used batteries inside the black bag in your battery bin.
Store used batteries in a cool, dry, well ventilated area.

Batteries that have the potential to spark, including 9V batteries, should have their ends taped.

If you have any corroding or leaking batteries use a plastic bag to pick up the battery and tie the bag at one end before placing it into the battery bin.

Remember your bin is for dry cell batteries only - no rubbish or car batteries allowed.

Mobile Muster - bring in your old mobile phones

We have joined forces with Mobile Muster to offer participating battery collection schools a chance to dispose of old mobile phones.  For more information or to take part in the program through the EMRC please see our Mobile Muster page.
