The provision of waste education programs and resources for the general community is a priority in Perth's Eastern Region.  The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) has a number of programs and resources that community members and groups can utilise.

EMRC Services and Programs

Earth Carers  

Earth Carers are members of the community who take part in the Earth Carers course to learn practical ways of reducing waste at home and in the community. 

Community Talks and Workshops

Waste Education Officers are available for talks and workshops on waste education with community groups from Perth's Eastern Region.  Topics can be discussed with the event organiser to the cover specific topics. 

Some topics include:

  • What we can all do to reduce, reuse and recycle more effectively;
  • What happens to our Waste in Perth's Eastern Region;
  • Community programs and waste services available for residents.

Talks and workshops are available during weekdays and bookings are essential.

Red Hill Waste Management Facility Tours

Free tours of the Red Hill Waste Management Facility are available for interested community groups during weekdays.

Environmental Education Centre

The centre is suitable for hands-on workshops and group activities. While the focus of the centre is on school students, it also has regular visits from environmental educators, allied professionals and community groups.

EMRC Equipment for Hire

Loan Boxes

The EMRC has a selection of equipment packaged up in loan boxes ready for use. Schools and community groups can hire the activity loan boxes for up to three weeks. Hire is free of charge for schools and community groups in the Town of Bassendean, Cities of Bayswater, Belmont, Kalamunda and Swan and the Shire of Mundaring.

Waste Audit Kit

EMRC’s Waste Audit Loan Kit is available for use by schools and community groups for one week. Hire is free of charge for schools and community groups in the eastern region. Waste auditing is the first step in understanding what kinds of waste are being generated by your organisation and helps start conversations about what you can do to minimise or avoid waste.

The contents of the loan kit align with that of the kit used by the State Government’s Waste Wise Schools (WWS) program. Schools are advised to conduct a waste audit every six months to track their progress.

Event Recycling Trailer

A 'Do the Right Thing' events recycling trailer is available for use by Councils, community groups and event organisers throughout Perth's Eastern Region.  The trailer contains bin caps that fit over normal 240L wheelie bins. There are 20 bin caps for general rubbish bins and 20 for recycling bins. Banners highlighting event recycling are included in the trailer and these can be easily erected and dismantled.

Litter Letters

The Litter Letters is a highly visual 3D messaging system used to raise awareness and promote action about the impact of litter on our environment and in our community. The letters are constructed out of wire mesh and rebar and designed to act as cages, to safely hold and display the materials collected.  There are two different sized sets of Litter Letters that can be utilised, free of charge, by schools and community groups in the eastern region for up to two weeks.

Recycle Right

Recycle Right has been developed to encourage and assist residents and businesses in Western Australia to correctly recycle and reduce their rubbish. Visit the Recycle Right website or download the app to find out which bin to put items in, find recycling and drop off points in Perth and advice on living sustainably.

Cleanaway Community Education

Cleanaway offer a number of outreach programs to the community including site excursions, workshops and awareness campaigns. More information about these services can be found here

The Recycling Near You website contains information about the recycling and waste services offered by your council as well as local drop-off options for items including computers, batteries, printer cartridges, mobile phones and many more.
