R-Gang and 4Rs logo

The R-Gang characters and 4Rs logo were developed as a tool to assist EMRC with raising awareness in the community on waste management and waste minimisation issues.
The characters symbolise the four principles of sustainable waste management – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and Recover. Each character is made from materials associated with that particular waste minimisation activity.
The 4Rs logo is a branding tool that symbolises the integrated nature of waste management, or the idea that waste management is a continuous cycle of reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering resources and that it involves people and communities.

EMRC encourages the external use of the R-Gang and 4Rs logo as tools to raise awareness and educate the community, government and non-government organisations, industries and schools about waste issues.
In 2002, during the development of the R-Gang and logo, the Waste Management Community Reference Group recommended that the characters be tested against sample target audiences as a way of assessing how well the characters communicated messages about the 4Rs, to determine appropriate tones of voice and also to assess the effectiveness of written materials.
The results from this research suggested that:
-
The R-Gang is an appropriate tool to raise awareness about waste issues
-
Is especially attractive to children and
-
The characters made people want to learn more about waste.
To ensure that the integrity of the characters and the logo are maintained, EMRC have developed a style guide which provides a set of guidelines which outline how the characters are to be used and refers to issues such as fonts, size and placement.
The use of the R-Gang and 4R's logo is also bound by a License Agreement which along with the style guide, is provided below:
