Red Hill Environmental Education Centre
Community awareness and education regarding the high standard of operation and environmental performance of the Red Hill Waste Management Facility continues to be an important part of the operations of the site. The EMRC provides tours of the facility for the community, local and state Government, private organisations, concerned parties and international delegates.
The Environmental Education Centre has been upgraded to provide enhanced educational programs for schools and community groups. It will continue to provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about ways that we can contribute towards a sustainable future and successful waste management through reducing, re-using, recycling and recovering resources from our waste.
School Activities in the Environmental Education Centre
By visiting our education centre, your students will have a great opportunity to learn more about ways they can contribute towards a sustainable future and successful waste management through Reducing, Re-using, Recycling and Recovering resources from our waste.
A visit to the centre is broken up into two sessions:
Session One (40 minutes)
Students work individually to create a piece of artwork with re useable objects that would normally be thrown away in the rubbish. Their art work will be temporary as it will be dismantled at the end of the lesson for future groups to re-use the objects.
Students work together in a sorting and classifying activity to determine what can be done with waste.
Session Two (40 minutes)
Students learn about several aspects of sustainability by working in groups to complete a course of eight activities. Topics covered include:
- Do you know your waste?
- Household hazardous waste
- Water savers
- Current life-cycle of waste
- Landfill management
- Introducing the R-Gang
- Shop smart
- Litter behaviour
